As I sit here contently munching on my Scandinavian Kitchen Cinnamon bun, I cannot help but recall that this time last week I was basking in the glorious Swedish sunshine with a real Swedish cinnamon bun in my hand, the sun kissed lakes to my left and the medieval town of Gamla Stan to my right.
It is poignant that I am unlikely to relive that moment of utter bliss quite in the same way again but selecting photos for this blog post has definitely been a pleasing reminder.
Always time for a quick Pret before boarding |
(Very) brief guide to Stockholm
Stay| Look no further than Berns Hotel - part hotel, part restaurant, part library and party nightclub. It is the best place to stay if you want a central location, good value for the money and free VIP entry to all the best clubs in Stockholm. In fact the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Blur have all stayed at this wonderful hotel.
Eat | You have been warned. Book your Friday and Saturday night dinners before you get to Stockholm, for the everyone who's anyone is out on both nights. On Friday night, we didn't get round to eating until 11pm! I would definitely recommend Sturehof for classic Swedish cuisine, with a particular focus on sea food. For another extra special meal, try Riche. We didn't manage to get in for food (queue was three hours long) but from the bar area, the food looked tantalising. For lunch try Albert & Jacks, the only deli in Stockholm. Make sure you sneak a cinnamon bun in your handbag for a post lunch snack. There are also some lovely little cafes in the medieval old town, Gamla Stan. Stortoget in particular has plenty to choose from and also a great square to sit and people watch.
Do | As we were only there for a three days (two and half days really, as after the early morning flight, we were pretty much walking talking zombies for most of Friday) we plainly ambled around this beautiful city, taking it all in. A lovely place to wander is the medieval town of Gamla Stan for the cobbled streets, vintage shops and pretty squares. The route there from central Stockholm is magical too, with the view of the Royal Palace against the backdrop of the lakes. For a more trendy vibe, head southwards to Sodermalm (the shoreditch of Stockholm)to peruse the independent boutiques and Swedish brands such as Monki, Weekday and Acne. Take a cruise around the 14 islands of Stockholm - Stockholm Sightseeing company does a pretty good "Under the Bridges" tour for around £20.00. For something a little more purse friendly, head to Langholmen for the sandy beaches Djurgarden for treetop walks, cycle paths and some of the best views of the city.
Party (hard) | Start at the trendy and glamorous White Room whilst your purse is full, keep the party going at the more laid back Hell Kitchen and stay out until dawn at Berns Hotel Club, well in the knowledge that your bed is only a lift ride away ;)
Word of advice | Ok, so Stockholm is expensive, I'm not going to lie but with return flights at only £70.00 return with Norwegian Airlines, you will definitely have change to spare when you arrive. Keep it cheap with a simple danish and coffee for breakfast and a salad for lunch but splash out on dinners and drinks.
